caught this off of URB.com.
http://www.vimeo.com/6227198Did you see or hear about it this last weekend? Tempt’s name sprayed at the top of the former Olympic Auditorium as well as the Abe Friedman Occupational Center building, both next to the 10 freeway near the Grand Ave. off-ramp. In large white letters and with dripping painting clearly showing, Tempt’s name shone again in bright clear letters last Friday and Saturday nights around 9:00-10:00 pm. How long has it been since the City of Los Angeles has seen Tempt’s signature letters on its walls, buildings, freeways, and canvases? A looonnnggg time, brothers and sisters…….a loooonnnnggg time.
Well, in the cool of last Saturday evening, with the brightness of the moon shining brightly down, we stood in an empty parking lot across from LAUSD’s 5 story Abe Friedman Occupation Center and looked up at Tempt’s writing. The dripping of the white paint was as clear as day. You would have thought that Tempt was real sloppy in his work. We stood there in awe silently staring upward and aking in each letter with amazement. How could this be? How could this happen? How could Tempt have done this painting 5 stories up much less even at all???!!!
Well, the miracle here is that the “real” Tempt One (K2S, STN) actually did paint his name on top of those buildings this last Saturday night. Fortunately for him, he did not have to don his black outfit, carry his black pouch full of paint, and make his way upward on the building like some form of Mr. America, the Hornet, Marvel Man, or even Bruce Lee.
You see, the miracle lay in the arrival of 5 “teckies” arriving in Los Angeles from Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Barcelona, London, and New York for the sole purpose of developing a technology so that Tempt , as well as any other individuals in similar medical situations could access this technology at no cost, using “Open Source” code and technology. The team is called the Graffiti Research Lab (GRL) and they came once before to help Tempt paint his name onto a wall for the first time in almost 7 years. You see, due to Tempt’s bout with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (aka ALS), he has not painted a wall or canvas in more than 7 years. Today, he lies in a convalescent room in Alhambra connected to a breathing machine and a stomach tube. He cannot move his arms or legs, cannot eat or swallow with his mouth, cannot speak. However, his mind is wide awake and with his eye movements, he is able to communicate with the use of a MyTobii computer system where he types words and phrases which, in turn, the computer voices out loud to visitors. He also communicates daily online by email with his many friends, relatives, supporters. He can be contacted by email at Tony15643 (at) yahoo.com.
The GRL people spent the entire week working on the details of the Eyewriter and by Friday and Saturday evening Tempt was able to paint his name onto a computer using eye movements and the calligraphy was projected onto the top of the buildings almost 5 miles away with the use of a laptop, projection machine, and a generator. That’s how it was done, friends!! While Tempt painted in his room, his name projected onto the top of the buildings 5 miles away at the same time. Tempt was out there doing it again and again and again!!
What a blessing! What a miracle!! Thank you to the heavens, thank you to each of the GRL, and thank you to Mick Ebeling who paid for and had vision for this whole project.
If you travel by the Abe Friedman Occupational Center off the 10 freeway and look up at the building, you’ll only see the name of the school listed up there. You see, last Saturday, his name was beamed up there and, yes, the lettering did actually have dripping paint in it — it was one of the features in the software. You can look at some of the GRL’s former work on youtube under Graffiti Research Lab.

As an alternative to the usual night club madness I produce on a weekly basis, some friends and I are changing it up a bit by adding a weekly dinner party at my boy Tony Riviera’s place on Sunset, aptly named; Tony’s. This will be a weekly gathering of fly, like minded folks, that enjoy fine dining and a little dancing with music provided by DJ Scott Oster. So make sure you call Tony’s for reservations. See you there.
